VACCCCCAAATTTTTIIIIIIOOOOOOONNNNNNNN [09 Aug 2008|04:31pm]
[ mood | ecstatic ]

friday was my last day of work for 2 weeks. today is saturday, but it's not a normal saturday. it is the first day of my vacation. a totally different feeling from normal saturdays. because tomorrow night i won't be stressing about getting ready for work in the morning.

the time for sleeping in and going out and actually spending time with my wife and baby has begun. also for music:-D finally some time to work on music again. ryan has a music night coming up that sounds promising....

the best thing is that it's just beginning. i'm not even thinking about next week. right now vacation feels like the best thing in the world. seriously. i love not having to go to work.

conflict in thoughts [29 Jun 2008|12:44am]
[ mood | pensive ]

city streets or reclusive woods...

i just took back a dvd to the rental place, & didn't enjoy my late-night stroll through the neighborhood. the patterned sidewalks and beehive apartments just didn't seem to have any life. even the terrazas didn't seem inviting, blah people sitting around with screaming children running back and forth, and it was a relief to escape into my darkened portal. escape. the word was like a mantra on this walk. maybe an expression of more than i have the energy to even think about fully.

back in the apartment, top floor inferno of spanish summer, i looked out over the orange night of alcala. every time i look out from this side balcony i'm surprised by how pleasant the view is, and think i should spend more time here. our inner balcony is big and nice with all the plants, but the view is just the opposite building. i don't think i'd survive if we weren't on the top, even with the heat.

a heavy mist had risen from the henares river, across the town from us. we're up on the hill, so i look over the top of old alcala, to where the river lies at the foot of those distinctive plateaus. tonight i couldn't see them, not even a trace, on account of the mist from the henares.

and then i thought of how unhappy the city makes me sometimes, or is it just having to work, or is it just having to work doing something i don't like? i thought of nijmegen, how the city felt different, and the woods across the street from my house were comforting, alive, sprawling back into germany somewhere, a walk i never made.

i don't know, it's a bit of all of this. the halfway point was difficult in nijmegen, living in a damp basement with no job and little money, and too much time. so i suppose it's logical that the halfway point here is the same, living in a really great apartment with enough money, and no time. i might already be looking at it as if it were only going to be a year and then i'll be somewhere else. we'll see.

change your clocks, soft sweet rabbits [29 Mar 2008|11:25pm]

it seemed appropriate in this haze of slow and sometimes shoegazy post rock to let you know that you should change your clocks. you'll lose an hour of sleep, but it has to be done.
now hush.

Merry Christmas Arianna Rowan [25 Dec 2007|03:18pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

merry christmas everyone.

well, finally Arianna was born.
it was a really great experience, and we've been enjoying her for a week now...
the lack of sleep is sometimes rather unpleasant, but she really is worth it:-)
in this time i've gotten her registered with the town hall in hilversum, flown to spain and back to renew my residency, not had a job interview because the lady was sick the one day i was in spain, inspected a prospective apartment in alcala that i was very pleased with, missed two concerts i really wanted to go to (stars of the lid and Robert Henke), and celebrated christmas with the in-laws.
here is a link to the update i wrote on eva's pregnancy blog (with plenty of pictures): Arianna
and the promised birth announcement:

concerning some music [12 Dec 2007|09:41pm]
[ mood | cold ]

first of all, no baby yet. annoying. this means she won't be born on the date that i've had an intuitive feeling about since the very beginning. oh well, as long as she's born SOOOn...

so, ryan's comment on my last entry sparked this entry.
see, ryan really sparked my interest in shoegazer music. i liked the starflyer 59 he'd played. and of course i had heard of my bloody valentine before, but when he asked me to bring him "loveless"and "isn't anything" from the states and i actually listened, i started to get into it. oh, and slowdive's "souvlaki". the funny thing is (and this is how it usually works for me) i already had several cocteau twins LPs that i liked very much. call the cocteau twins whatever you want, but basically it's post-punk goth rock dream pop that spanned the 80's and continued up to the early 90's and really began the shoegazer sound. robin guthrie developed a brilliant sound, elizabeth fraser had a vocal style completely her own, and simon raymonde added an atmospheric touch so that it all came together in a woozy, hazy, spidery world that i've really come to love. so discovering my bloody valentine was a logical (if a little late) next step. the textures achieved by guitar and keyboard engineering are really mesmerizing. so of course i also started listening to the bands that came out of MBV like Slowdive, and the many other 80's shoegazer bands that popped up and disappeared without a trace by the end of the 90's.
and now there are such things as "newgaze" and "doomgaze" appearing, which are also very pleasing to me:-) and artists like Windy & Carl, Eluvium, Landing, and Fennesz have been combining shoegazer sounds with ambient, drone, post rock, and electronic asthetics.
one so called newgaze band that has really caught my attention is Airiel. do yourself the favor. basically they're just reviving the original shoegazer sound. examples of doomgaze are still relatively few, but i'd say jesu and Nadja are worth mentioning. both bands are really doing something new, starting from a doom metal base and adding a shoegazer touch with their layering of guitar effects.
so why is it called shoegazer? dream pop seemed like a better term, though it veered away from pop and could sometimes be more nightmarish than dreamy... i've heard it's because they just stared at their feet when they performed live. well, whatever. the name stuck.

impatient days [07 Dec 2007|04:53pm]
[ mood | impatient ]

well, here is today in a nutshell:

woke up and eva had cramps, but they went away. i'm still hoping the baby will decide to come today. had a cup of coffee and watched "moving to the country" on BBC. listened to an LP of banjo music while eva tried to nap. took a shower. watched the first half of "bargain hunt" on BBC. had lunch. eva's mom had made dark bread with nuts in the breadmaker, so the sandwiches were nice, plus we had leftover sweet&sour chicken. after lunch we all went to town. first stop was Het Goed, or the second hand store or thrift store or whathaveyou. started off looking at baby clothes, but they were mostly ugly and dirty so i quickly moved on to the LPs. picked out several that were worth having, but not worth the price...

-Uriah Heep's "Magician's Birthday" with lovely gatefold Roger Dean album cover.. too expensive
-Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young's "Deja Vu" ... too expensive
-Donovan - dutch compilation of his early songs... too expensive & a little crappy (department store record label)

then i found two that i ended up taking home:

-Ennio Moricone's "Once Upon A Time In The West" soundtrack... i love it.
-the Cocteau Twins' "Heaven or Las Vegas"... i haven't heard this one. i'm a huge Cocteau Twins fan, but more of their early-middle stuff. this one is supposedly a bit more commercial and accessible than their other ones, but i'm hoping it'll still be good. i'll probably go listen to it in a little while.

then we went downtown and looked around in stores. it's cold and windy. at night it storms and the windows whistle and rattle. that always makes a warm bed extra cozy.

so, now i'm home ruminating. i do think the baby should try to make it out today. we're just sitting around waiting for it. everything is ready... here at least. i don't really want to think about spain yet, but i do sometimes. i really have to.

it's tough when you hear that renting a house is so much cheaper here. and a rather large house at that. jobs pay more. i guess if i could work out a residency permit for the European community and find some job leads maybe we could live here. i know eva's not too keen on living in spain and would happily accept a change of plans to come to holland or even move to the states. it's hard, because i feel like we should stick to my original decision of living in spain and at least try it. but i know it won't be easy, especially since we'll be going back with a baby daughter. i guess that's what we're nervous about.

i got new userpics, see?

birth announcements [04 Dec 2007|07:02pm]
[ mood | calm ]

well, no delivery yet:-)
she hasn't shown any real signs of the birth being imminent, but the due date is tomorrow, so it really could be any second.
yesterday evening i went to arnhem to my brother-in-law's house to work on the birth announcements. (he just got the official latest photoshop on his mac pro thingy whatever computer) so it went well and i think they're going to be nice. i had to let him know what our daughter's name is though. so far he's the only one to know besides eva and me. i think.
so, when she's born i'll post the birth announcement here in case you're not on our list of people that will receive a hard copy in the mail. (don't take it personally if you're not, we're not sending out that many)
i read on ryan's blog that he hates christmas. i didn't remember this about him, but i guess it doesn't surprise me. there is much about what it has become that i also am repelled by. we celebrate things in such meaningless ways now. anyway, eva's got the josh groban christmas music blasting in the living room and she and her mom are putting up the christmas tree and decorating the house:-)
i think i'll go upstairs and put on a record (i'm enjoying my collection once again as it was stowed away in boxes in the attic here) and finish my book:-) goodnight all.

manticornio [26 Nov 2007|10:06pm]
apparently we're in the anticyclone... this makes me happy for some unknown reason.
according to the weatherman, this means freezing nights and sunny days. and lots of wind.

i'm not working anymore. this means i'm getting ready to go be with my wife in holland. friday i'll catch the early plane, and we'll wait till our daughter is ready to come out.

then a new phase will begin. i don't have a job lined up or a house for when we come back.

anyway. i have to clean the house these days, and get all our stuff out (to my parents' house). i got the heating to work today:-) finally. it's been so cold in the house. oh well, i've saved money this way.

today i thought of a name for my music projects that involve other people: "Manticornio"
i suppose it sounds better in spanish. "manticore" is a mythological animal.... often depicted as having a lion's body, human head (with lion's mane), and scorpion's tail. i think in spanish it's actually "manticora" but i like "manticornio" better. gives a different meaning though i suppose, with "cornio" implying that it's got horns. "Manticore" was also a record label run by the group ELP in the 70's...
"Malicorne" also sounds cool, but it was a french folk band in the 70's, who got their name from a french town.
anyway. all this because i made a song with sam (a long time ago, before i started working) and he asked me what we should call ourselves. so, there you go: "Manticornio"

or maybe "manticorne"

i don't know. i feel like watching a movie, or doing something nice... it would be nice to be with my wife. she's gotten rather bigger:-)

maybe i'll go to madrid for a while one of these days before heading to holland. after the house is done of course.

i'm so tired [16 Oct 2007|06:45pm]
[ mood | exhausted ]

i've been hired at the Casa Vieja, a traditional restaurante alcalaino... an asadero and gran meson. my goodness, i've never done so much work and been so tired in my life... well, maybe the three days i worked for a potato farmer in holland were worse. maybe.

but, it's pretty cool at the same time. i've learned to make great cafes, throw perfect canes, assemble the postre alcalaino, make tostas del abuelo, etc........ waiting the tables is a little scary still, i spilled stuff once, but i feel very comfortable behind the bar now, and taking drink and dessert orders are no problem. i had to learn to open wine bottles and serve them at the tables...

i've cut both hands twice, and three fingers since i started working there. my feet hurt. they don't pay by the hour, and i work from 12 noon till 6:30-ish most days, then gorge myself on the most delicious meats with no vegetables or fruit till about 7:00. I might have time to go home or meet eva somewhere, then i have to be back at work at 8:00. then we'll see. usually i go home around 2:30 am. sometimes later. that's the typical schedule. sometimes it's a little better, like today. so i'm learning a lot, and trying to keep my head above the water. it's not a job i'll be planning on returning to after the baby is born. but for now it'll pay the bills. the coffee and food and beer are so good......

so, i don't have time for much else these days. sundays are half-days at work, so we go home around 6:30 or 7:00 and don't come back. mondays we have off.
BUT next sunday i'm going to see Efterklang, which i'm excited about. i missed the Fennesz show here in madrid because i got off work a bit too late and no one wanted to or could go with me. but i'm not missing efterklang.

and alethea came to visit with her friend gina, who left. it's nice to see her again, it's been a long time. she's staying with eva and me for now, then she'll go to the days' house. it's been fun to catch up and talk about old times.... the little that i've been around that is. this work schedule is just crazy. anyway.

this is all i have time for now. have to start thinking about going back to work.

cerrajeros [18 Sep 2007|02:43pm]
[ mood | kranky ]

so, i was out front planting some new plants that my dad gave me from his garden. eva came out to give me a pitcher of water, and a gust of wind shut the door behind her.

boom, just like that we were locked out. the windows all have bars on them. the garage doors were locked. the keys were inside. so, we walked to my parents house and called the cerrajeros. i didn't ask how much it would cost.

i waited about half an hour in front of my house, a guy shows up, does his thing, the door opens. he takes my details, and says "80 euros con 73".

i couldn't believe my ears. maybe i should have been a cerrajero. so, i gave him literally all the money we had in the house, which happened to total 80 euros. he said to leave the 73 cents. wow, what a nice guy.

i can't believe this happened. i am a bit angry. money is tight now anyway. i hate it that stupid things like this have to happen. anyway.

i signed a contract for a crappy english teaching job thursday mornings. the pay is really bad, and i don't like teaching english. i don't really know why i took the job. oh well.

i'm having a bad day. i hope the plants at least survive.

veo veo veraneo [04 Sep 2007|06:22pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

many a CV has been distributed, electronically and in person, to ETTs and specific locations...

an interview was held today, don't know what will come of it. i'm not convinced it's the best option, but it seems ok and is better than nothing. recepcionista/administrativo/secretario work is pretty good to have on a resume anyway. it's the timing that i'm worried about. i'm having a daughter in december.

haven't heard from anyone else besides starbucks. let's not work there, ok?
they're opening one here in alcala. this city needs something. but not starbucks.

i've been enjoying having piping hot bocadillos for lunch. i go to the panaderia and they're fresh out of the oven, still hot when i get home and fix them up and eat them, the cheese slightly melting...

it's nice to have rooms. it's a big change from our basement in the netherlands. i can sit down in the kitchen. there is a dinner table and two couches... i can look through the windows and actually see stuff, not just steps going up.

i put cayenne pepper and cinnamon in the ground coffee this afternoon. it perked quite well. spicy coffee is good. not fancy. just spicy.

i'm waiting by the phone.

alcala livin [29 Aug 2007|02:38pm]
well, we're moved in.
after much stressing and packing and box reorganizing, we got on a plane to spain. we've left behind the netherlands, our home for a little over a year, where i was never "legalized".

we've moved in to the Munro's chalet in alcala de henares. they're gone to the states till january, so we've got the run of the place. we weren't able to bring as much as we were originally planning to, which is a little disappointing, but hopefully we'll gradually transport our belongings from holland to spain. little trips here and there, people we know making the trip, etc...
we'll be going back to holland for eva's delivery in december, so we can bring some stuff back then.

now we're just getting readjusted to life in spain... checking out where the nearest grocery stores are, the panaderia, etc.. the train is just at the end of our street:-D i've got to get a job. maybe something temporary at first, since i'll have to go to holland in december for the baby. then when i get back in january start with something full time and bring in the big bucks. ha. hopefully.

so, if you're around, drop me an email, give me a call.

summer=music festivals [19 Aug 2007|01:36pm]
[ mood | pensive ]

yes, i had my share of music festival this summer too. ryan went to primavera sound. chris went to sonar. i stayed in nijmegen, and a festival came to me:-)

i posted about this on my music blog, so i hope you don't mind the cross-posting. this will be an abridged and summaric version. (scroll to the bottom to get to the new stuff not on the other blog)

what we had seen being set up all over town were the preparations for a week-long, open-air, FREE music festival featuring every genre imaginable. there was seriously something for everyone. on the historic hill where the castle used to be was a section of particular interest to me, called "de Affaire". here were more experimental, alternative, folksy, electronic, etc... acts. basically, not the mainstream or cheesy acts elsewhere all over town (crappy techno, cheesy 80's cover bands, smartlappen [the most horrible music ever, of dutch origin], house, pub rock, europop, nederpop, other pop, etc...)

so, on this hill EVERY NIGHT was at least one performance that i really wanted to see, some because i knew them and others because i wanted to check them out. very nice:-) and it was all free.

night #1: Eva and i went to see A Hawk and a Hacksaw. I had one of their cds once, they're nice balkan-folk type stuff with post-everything influences... it was a really fun performance, except that eva was worried that the noise was too loud for the baby. i think it was ok.

full story here

night #2: An artist i'd only ever heard one song from-- Leafcutter John. but it left me intrigued, so i was thrilled that they were there. also folk-based, but with some experimental noisy stuff. i guess people call it laptop-folk or folk-tronica.

the full story

and then came Animal Collective. a group that i'm not crazy about, but they're alright. also folk-based, but you wouldn't know it most of the time. rather experimental and a little psychedelic. their instruments consisted of a jumble of electronics, floor toms, cymbals, and keyboards.

the full story

night #3: this ended up being probably my favorite, and i discovered a new artist that i really like. Machinefabriek is an electronic artist who doesn't use a laptop. his music ranges from harsh noise to lovely ambient and drones. this night was a combination of both, and the location was great... the ruins of an old chapel as the sun set. eva stayed behind on this one because we knew it'd be loud and noisy.

the full story

after machinefabriek i waited around to see The Rapture. another band i'm not crazy about, but i guess they're fun enough. sort of disco-indie rock or something. i didn't stick around for too long. they had a cowbell player. (he also played sax and keyboards)

night #4: this one was probably the most fun. i'd heard of Konono No. 1 back when i worked at the record store in North Carolina. they're from the Congo area, where they accidentally stumbled into the "junk electronics" genre, combining it with their traditional thumb-piano playing. turns out to be a great combination!!

the full story

after that came Maskesmachine, a strange Belgian all-girl band that incorporated synchronized aerobic routines and dances as well as random visual projections into their live performance. quite interesting and artsy, but in the end not so great musically.
full story here

and then i had to be out of town for the rest of the week due to baby business:-) (we had an ultrasound)

here are the rest of the photos from around town and stuff during the week. it was really a fun time with my wife:-D we made some good memories of the town we've come to love, and have now left, our home for a year....

a hot air balloon, a good sign:

downtown by the entrance to "de Affaire":

candy stall or "temptation":

chairs set up for the walk-a-thon parade:

people unloading a couch across from our house:

a mobile cafe/bar in a double-decker bus:

fireworks over the waal river (what we could see of them):

chris came and went [15 Aug 2007|02:08pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

ok, time for an update:-)

this makes a total of TWO people that have visited us here in holland. my brother joel was the first, and:

back in july our good friend chris cherene stopped by for a few days on his bohemian low-budget (no-budget) tour of europe. he specially caught a train down to nijmegen from amsterdam just to spend some days with us. it was a nice little visit... we walked in the woods, strolled through the city, and hung out at our little house. he had a feeling that the baby was going to be a girl. i knew it was going to be from the start:-) turns out we were both right.

while chris was here we saw posters up all over town for some music festival and we thought, oh cool, and forgot about it. even when they were setting up stages literally ALL OVER TOWN... we were like, blah, whatever, it's some cheesy dutch music festival that we will have no interest in. after chris left we found out how wrong we were... it's a shame he missed it. but that's for the next post. for now, here are a few of the photos we took while chris was here. unfortunately he hasn't sent me the photos he took, so these are the only ones i've got:

UK trip: 10 days in England and Scotland [16 Jul 2007|01:37pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

so, eva and i are back from our trip to the UK.
we went with eva's parents, and had a really nice time. here are the photos!!!
(not all of them, just a select few, some of my favorites)

we began our vacation crossing on a ferry from dunkirk to dover, and canterbury was our first stop. eva and i went into canterbury cathedral, and i was impressed by how huge it is... but i guess that makes sense as it was such an important pilgrimage destination. i was very much thinking of the canterbury music scene from the 70's... Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North, Caravan, etc...

next we stopped at Bulstrode Manor, near the village of Gerrard's Cross (near Reading, outside of London), a sprawling estate that WEC now uses are their headquarters (that's eva's parents' organization). They got it for some ridiculously low price back in the 60's or something. It was a fascinating building, I could tell it was full of secrets. There is also a dungeon, most of which is still unexplored...

the next day we quickly took a look around Oxford... quite impressive, rather posh and intellectual, but it seemed to have a lot of cool things going on. we caught a nice little exhibit on Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarch (italy's 3 top dogs) and i saw several fliers up for bands that i enjoy, such as United Bible Studies. we thought of ryan, who spent some time studying in Oxford.

From oxford we made our way to Stratford-upon-avon. i was a bit disappointed by how touristy this town was, but i suppose that's to be expected when it comes to shakespeare. it was quaint and we enjoyed a tea at Hathaway's tea rooms.

the next day we headed to dorset county in the south and did the "thomas hardy pilgrimage"... which was very nice, not only because eva is writing her thesis on him. i also really like thomas hardy and it was great to see the cottage where he was born, the house he designed and lived in, the church he went to (where his heart is buried) and many places that appear in his works...

on the way back to bulstrode we drove by stonehenge and took some pictures from a distance to not have to pay... it was still quite impressive. we were there at twilight, and the countryside around it was beautiful.

then we drove all the way up to scotland.

we stayed a couple of nights in West Linton, on the way to Edinburgh. it was a lovely little village, and the family we stayed with was very nice... they had a bunch of rowdy kids, which was fun. they also served us haggis, and one night we had a traditional irish and scottish folk music jam, which was great... the first time i've played folk music with anyone else since the Red Herring:-D they also showed us Edinburgh, which i thought was a really great city... i'd like to go back some time.

next we stayed in a couple's house in Dundee, north of Edinburgh, who are both doctors. it was a pretty nice house. we had it to ourselves, as they were both away. from there we made a lovely trip down to St. Andrew's... the home of golf (not that that was so wonderful) and the home of Belhaven Scottish Ale (that was wonderful!;-). there is also an important university there.

then we drove back down to bulstrode for a night and the next day back to dover, crossed on the ferry again, and here i am back in the netherlands.

photos for disk space pt. 3: the haircut [28 Jun 2007|08:14pm]
[ mood | gettin ready to go to england ]

my brother-in-law dave and i had been discussing buzzing our heads for a while. (for different motives) finally we took the plunge. we both really like having our hair this short, so we've had it like this ever since. when i went to spain my hair was a bit longer already, but this morning betty cut it for me again. unfortunately my beard, which was bushy by now, didn't look too great with the buzzed head. i had hoped that it would. maybe the beard needs to be WAAAAY bushy before it will look cool w/ super short hair. we'll see. anyway, the beard was trimmed for now. the photos are from the first time we cut our hair, which was a while ago.

photos for disk space pt. 2: mushrooms [28 Jun 2007|07:35pm]
[ mood | oho ]

i have further explored the woods in our neighborhood (the heumensoord) and by now i've grown rather fond of particular places. i hadn't seen any mushrooms for a while, then suddenly i saw these pretty fellers on a random walk.

they were covering a rather large fallen log. after one particularly violent wind/thunder/rain storm the forest was completely littered by fallen trees. it's a rather eerie feeling to hop down into the hole previously occupied by a massive tree trunk and roots... or to climb a tree horizontally, past leaves that are still green and everything. this log had been there for a while though.

i think it's mushroom season again, but i'm away from my woods now, so i won't be seeing any. there will probably still be some when i get back though, so i'll see if i can post some more photos later.   maybe i'll even see some on our trip to england and scotland....  you'll see pictures from the trip at any rate.

i did however see a perfect mushroom ring here in my parents-in-law's back yard. little ones, in a complete circle. i guess that's called a faerie ring. anyway, unfortunately eva's dad decided it was time to mow the lawn, so it's gone before i could snap a photo:-)

photos for disk space pt. 1: within the frog drone [28 Jun 2007|04:13pm]
[ mood | aha ]

i'll finally get around to posting these photos now, so that i can delete them from my hard drive, and for your enjoyment, of course.

so here's the story on the first set:

one slightly drizzly late morning i sat in our basement house experimenting with my acoustic guitar... all strings were down-tuned to an open minor chord, and i was practicing a glissando drone. glissando is when you slide between notes, usually with a metal or glass "slide", and glissando drone is when you just hover on a single chord or note with the slide, so that it slightly wavers but stays on the same pitch. i was also experimenting bowing the strings with other metal objects like scissors and a tin whistle, which proved very interesting. it's kind of noisy, which is why it's usually not done on acoustic guitars but electric. so, there i sat intent upon my wavering drone and pulsating high-pitched screeches, when suddenly i looked up to the window. to my amazement i saw.........

a frog peering in. i am positive he was attracted by the sound of my glissando drone. it was kind of "froggy sounding". so i took a bunch of pictures of my little friend. he would leave if i stopped playing for a while, and then reappear when i started again.

by the end i could tell he wanted in.....  he started putting his little hands on the window and hopping along the window sill.

Catch up on all that has happened and will happen in the future [27 Jun 2007|11:46am]

well, that was a rather pretentious title for this post, and it's not entirely true. but we'll see to what extent now won't we....

so........ i went on a mini-trip to spain for a week or so. it was good. i saw many friends and spoke with many people about jobs and houses and so forth. it seems that there are opportunities for us there.

i am tired of living in holland illegally. i can't work here, and i try to be productive, but funds and materials are limited. and creativity comes and goes... but if you get into a pattern of living then it's hard to be creative, and it's hard not to get into a pattern in our little basement house. but anyway, i've tried to make the best of it, and i suppose i have.

so, on to the news. most people probably know, but i'm disappointed that i haven't told chris in person. maybe he knows already, but anyway, now he can read it here, or i'll email or chat him. eva and i are going to have a baby:-) it will be born in december. that's why the plans for spain have suddenly materialized.

i need to provide for this family i'm starting, so i have to go somewhere i can work. that was the states, or spain. i'd rather live in spain. i'm not saying i would never move back to the states, but preferably not now and not long-term. so, we've got a place to stay in spain (alcala, the munro's chalet by the trainstation while they're gone to the states, ideal location) till january, only paying utilities. pretty great. that way we can save up some money till the baby is born, and hopefully by then have found our own apartment.

eric and ryan seem to have decent jobs that i will look into, or something similar. and sam wants to start a band with me:-)

so, then i was back in holland and suddenly i had a job offer from a potato farmer in the north that my father-in-law knows. even though it's illegal and he could be fined 10,000 euros if they caught him, he wanted me to work for a few days because he had a lot of stuff to catch up on. so for three days in pouring rain and blistering sun alternately i did possibly the hardest work i've ever done. potato farmers are interesting people. maybe i'll share more about this experience later.

after that i spent a few days back in nijmegen at our house and started packing some boxes of our stuff. we're planning the big move for the end of august. and a couple of days ago eva's parents picked me up and brought the first load of boxes up to emmeloord to store till we get a truck to move everything to spain.

so here i am waiting for eva to get here, her last day of work was yesterday, and friday we'll tag along with her parents on a vacation to england and scotland for 10 days or so.

that was a lot of info for one post, but there was much to catch up on, no??? so, forgive the slow flow of posts lately, things have been busy, and i will be gone on vacation soon. i'm excited about it, i've never been to scotland. england several times, but not scotland. we'll take pictures and you'll see them eventually.

many changes, but i think i've accepted them well. i just do what i have to do, take it all in stride. people keep remarking that i'm so calm and laidback about it all, but i don't know any other way to be. i can't handle things unless i look at life this way. eva says i'll live a long time:-)

life is beautiful, even when it sucks, man.

i'm really excited about being a dad. nervous, probably unprepared, but who ever is? when is the "right" time? eh? ya got no answer, do ya?
